About the department

Department of civil engineering is one of the oldest departments in Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology. The Department offers BE Degree course apart from M.Tech degree course in Structural Engineering. The department has staff strength of 20 faculty members, of which eight faculty members already have PhD degree and another six members are pursuing their PhD. The department is strong in fields of Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources, Geotechnical Engineering and Remote Sensing and GIS fields. It has well established state of the art laboratories viz. CAD Lab, Building Materials Testing Lab, Environmental Engg. Lab, Geotechnical Engg. Lab, Survey Lab and Highway Engg. Lab.  About 340 B.E. and 36 M.Tech. Students are pursuing out their academic programme in the department. The Department has been recognized as a Research center under Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum and has facilities for carrying out research in the above said areas. Ten students are carrying out their PhD programme in the research center. A plumbing Centre is being established to train unemployed rural youths.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The Civil Engineering faculty in conjunction with its constituents has established the following program educational objectives for each of its students:

  • PEO1: Will gain knowledge in analysis, design to solve the real problems in the field of civil engineering and get confidence to involve independently.
  • PEO2: Will be able to expose to the technology in infrastructure development, public sector undertaking and gain knowledge for successful professionals in Civil engineering.
  • PEO3: To attain leadership quality in imparting professional attributes and ethics.
  • PEO4: Engaging in lifelong learning for adopting and upgrading the latest technological Changes including Higher Education.

Program Outcomes

Students graduating from the Department of Civil Engineering at Dr. AIT Bangalore will be expected and prepared to exercise the skills and abilities as listed below.

  1. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of differential equations, vector calculus, complex variables, matrix theory, probability theory, physics, chemistry and basics Civil Engineering and electrical and electronics engineering.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate and solve Civil Engineering, also by using the principles of Mechanical Engineering and electrical and electronics engineering problems.
  3. Graduate will demonstrate an ability to design components of building Structures, Hydraulic Structures, Bridge Structures,and Earth retaining Structures, Transportation structures, Environmental Engineering projects, Airpollution control design and environmental Management strategies of societal and environmental consideration.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to test the civil Engineering materials, Water Quality and wastewater characteristics and conduct relevant experiments to analyze, design and interpret the data for the construction and execution of civil engineering projects.
  5. Graduate will demonstrate skills to use modern engineering tools, software and equipment to analyze civil engineering problems.
  6. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context with reference to society, legal, health, safety and professional engineering practices.
  7. Graduate will show the understanding of impact of engineering solutions on the society and also will be aware of contemporary issues and sustainable development.
  8. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  9. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to visualize and work as individual and team member and also in multidisciplinary tasks.
  10. Graduate will be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  11. Graduate who can able to design, implement and validate the real time systems, applied to physical world using management skills.
  12. Graduate will develop confidence for self-education and ability for life-long learning.

Structural-EngineeringStructural Engineering

Department has five faculty members in the field of structural Engg. M.Tech course is also being offered in this particular field. Research facilities are available in the department to carryout research activities in this particular field. Some of the students are carrying out their PhD work in this field. A research project viz. “Health Monitoring, Repair and Rehabilitation of RC Structural Elements, sponsored by the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum for a value of INR 16.3 lakhs Rupees is being carried out in the department. More than 30 research papers in the field of Structural, Environmental, Geo-Technical and Water Resources engineering have been published during last one year at National and International level. 

Water-Resources-engineeringRemote Sensing and GIS and Water Resources engineering

Department has two faculty members working in this area. Department has very good collaboration with the industry in this field. Recently two National workshops on GIS, Remote Sensing and GPS fields have been organised by the department in which more than 200 persons participated in each of the workshop.  About five papers in RS&GIS fields have been published mainly in the areas of ground and surface water studies during last two years and one in the International Journal of Remote Sensing. Currently two Ph.D. students are working in field of RS&GIS. A research work on Modeling water and soil productivity and crop yield in water sheds of semi-arid climatic region Bangalore rural district, Karnataka is under progress.


Environmental Engineering Lab

Environmental Pollution is a global burning issue. Water and wastewater pollution, Air pollution, soil Pollution are to be understood by assessing the quality of pollutants. To incorporate the knowledge of qualitative analysis of Pollutants it is essential to study the characteristics of the pollutants. Environmental engineering lab is fully equipped with all sophisticated equipments for the analysis of the above and to evaluate the fitness as per BIS standards.

Concrete-and-Highway-Engineering-LabConcrete and Highway Engineering Lab

The concrete lab is equipped with compression testing machine, Non destructive testing equipments and other instruments to facilitate to conduct all the tests on building materials, concrete and concrete structures. Various consultancy works are being carried out in the laboratory to check the quality of building materials. The lab is being utilized both under graduate, post graduate and research scholars for their academic and research work.  Currently two PhD students are working in this field of research.

Long term goals

  • To develop Research lab in the area of Repair and Rehabilitation of Structures.
  • To develop training centre in Advanced Surveying.
  • To establish Consultancy centre.

Short term goals

  • To obain permission from competent authority to start Mtech programme in Construction Technology in addition to Structural engineering.
